Prepaid Cellular Phones:
Pros and Cons

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly about Prepaid Cellular Phones

Prepaid cellular phones have one major advantage over the pay-by-the-month plans: there is no contractual obligation. You pay as you go. So, why doesn't everybody just get a prepaid cellular phone and pay for what they use. Here are some pros and cons to prepaid cellular phones to keep in mind.

Pros: The Good Things about Prepaid Cellular Phones

< Prepaid cellular phone minutes can usually be spread over two or three months. If you only use your phone once in a while, it can be less expensive than paying every month for unused airtime.

< Prepaid cellular phones require no credit checks. This a good advantage for people who may have had credit problems since monthly billed plans do require credit approval.

< There are no monthly service fees to pay or be upcharged for later.

< There is no monthly bill. You pay in advance for the service.

< There are no security deposits. Some monthly plans may require a deposit.

< No contracts to sign or be accountable for later.

< You remain in control of the costs. You decide how much to spend.

< You can have anonymity. You may not have to disclose your real identity. I guess this could actually be a pro or con.

Cons: The Bad Things about Prepaid Cellular Phones

< Prepaid Cellular Phones are definitely more expensive on a per minute basis. Most likely a minute will cost about twice as much in a prepaid plan compared to a monthly plan. Check the plan's details before buying.

< Sometimes, not all services are included. For example, you may not be able to surf the wireless web or use your phone in analog areas.

< Long distance calls, for instance, may be charged a premium fee over what monthly consumers pay.

There are some definite positive things about getting prepaid cellular phone. If you only need a phone for emergencies or just plan to use one very little, then a prepaid phone is a good idea. The minutes may cost a lot more but if you aren't using many minutes then the prepaid cellular phone is the best solution.
