Local Cellular Phone Service PlansA Local Cellular Phone Plan May Be Right for YouLocal plans are generally designed for use within a specified area. These plans are designed for people who won't be using their cell phone very much and are looking for a low-cost option. Where exactly the local area is defined depends on the cellular phone carrier but is usually the size of a metro area. Since the plan is designed for local use, long distance calls will be charged--sometimes at a premium rate. Calling features such as voicemail and caller ID are often included free with local plans. These local cell plans do have a targeted market and can be quite useful. Parents with children they need to be able to reach in emergencies, elderly citizens who may want the comfort of a phone to carry with them at all times, or anyone else who wants the convenience but doesn't spend much time on the phone. A recent USA Today article stated "The smaller local providers will often focus on local, pre-paid and all-you-can-talk type plans in order to compete with the major carriers." So, if you don't plan on using your phone outside of your local area, getting a local plan might be the right choice.
