Analog Cellular InformationFirst Analog Cellular PhonesThere are three standard technologies used by cellular phone networks for transmitting voice and data:
FDMA is used for analog cellular phones (although it could be used for digital). As stated on the digital vs. analog page, analog allows a cellular phone to transmit signals by sending information that is always changing. Analog is considered the oldest way of sending modulating (going up and down like a sine wave) voice or data.
FDMA splits a frequency spectrum into different voice
channels. A workable analogy might be radio stations, where each station
sends its information within a specified radio frequency. When a FDMA
cellular phone ,makes a call, it reserves a frequency channel for the
whole phone call. The voice information is modulated into this channel’s
frequency band and sent over the airwaves. At the receiving cellular
phone, the information is recovered and demodulated. This is much like how
a computer modem operates. You can see a graphic of how FDMA can
distribute a frequency range. : Analog
channels can only be used one at at time
