But this type of technology was fairly limited at the time, and much more development was needed. Also in 1947, the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) decided to open up separate radio frequencies for cellular phone calling. With this development in place, AT&T and Bell Labs began testing the phones for public use.So, a cellular phone is a mobile phone which uses a communications system that divides a geographic region into sections, called "cells". Cellular Phones TodayCellular phones today can be placed into two basic categories: analog cellular phones and digital cellular phones. Analog cellular phones were the first ones on the market and some believe analog has better coverage than digital, and greater service availability. Plus, the initial cost for analog is usually cheaper than for digital. Digital cellular phones offer a better quality of service, more security for the customer, and the ability to support next-generation services.
