Cellular Phones: Yesterday and Today

A Brief History of the Cellular Phone

In 1947, researchers first began developing ideas for creating mobile phones that used "cells" (geographic areas) that would identify a user in whatever specific region the call was initiated. But this type of technology was fairly limited at the time, and much more development was needed. Also in 1947, the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) decided to open up separate radio frequencies for cellular phone calling. The commission only allowed for a whopping twenty-three cellular phone conversations in a given calling area.

Then in 1968, companies such as AT&T and Bell Labs proposed new methods of building a cellular phone system and the FCC opened up more frequencies available to cellular phone users. The companies' ideas were based on a concept of many small cellular towers that could handle cellular phone calls for a certain region. When users moved from one region to another, service was transferred to a closer tower.

With this development in place, AT&T and Bell Labs began testing the phones for public use.So, a cellular phone is a mobile phone which uses a communications system that divides a geographic region into sections, called "cells".

Cellular Phones Today

Cellular phones today can be placed into two basic categories: analog cellular phones and digital cellular phones. Analog cellular phones were the first ones on the market and some believe analog has better coverage than digital, and greater service availability. Plus, the initial cost for analog is usually cheaper than for digital.

Digital cellular phones offer a better quality of service, more security for the customer, and the ability to support next-generation services. Operators are looking to digital technology to help enable the new full-featured services of tomorrow, like wireless Internet applications.
